What is family dentistry?
Family dentistry involves providing dental care across all age spectrums. Many dental practices will say, "Hey, we won't see kids below a certain age." There are reasons for that. Suffice it to say, family dentistry is an office friendly to a family coming in to have their dental work done.
I see a couple of distinct differences in an office that's friendly to families. Primary among these is whether you can schedule appointments conveniently and together, avoiding several days or trips for your family. The second factor I see is whether you treat children.
In our office, we perform most of the necessary work. There are cases where I refer children out for a better experience, such as for sedation or to complete the work more quickly and under control. But in most cases, we handle most of the treatment needed here in our office, allowing patients to see a single dentist in a single office, maintaining that familiarity.
What are the benefits of family dentistry?
Family dentistry is comprehensive dentistry. When you consider what a person needs over their lifespan, they require consistent care. They need preventative work and consistent care with a practice philosophy of keeping you healthy, not just fixing things. That is the highest quality treatment I can offer a person. This can be achieved by establishing yourself in our office or another family office and staying there consistently over time.
Do all dentists offer family dentistry?
Some dentists, as far as family dentistry goes, don't offer comprehensive family care. They don't see children or perform a wide spectrum of dental procedures.
If you need a root canal, will you be referred out? If you need an extraction, do you have to see an oral surgeon? If you need wisdom teeth removed, do you need to go somewhere else? In our office, we handle most procedures in-house. I'm happy to help.
That's how we practice family dentistry, and that's why it's in our name. We provide traditional dentistry across the entire spectrum of the field. We pursue extensive training and upkeep to maintain this standard so we can deliver high-quality care, doing for you what I would do for my own family.
